When she becomes the target of an organization of incubi, who take what they want without asking, Diesel comes to her aid unexpectedly. They end up fighting the threat together, and in the process, Sofia discovers she—and she alone—can tame his rages.

Most of the main characters were introduced in her previous one, Aces Wild, though you wouldn't need to read that one first to follow the story. It also introduces Diesel's brother Luke and Sofia's friend Ginger (who are starring in Carlson's next novella.) One of my favorite things about this story is that it brings all of those characters together for much of the action. I really liked the buddy cop movie type atmosphere that created, as well as the chemistry, or lack there of, between Sofia and Neve, the heroine from Aces Wild. They seem to be on the verge of either a bonding moment or a cat fight most of the time.
Having all their friends around also makes it a little more difficult for Sofia and Diesel to consummate their relationship. The villains who keep trying to take control of her mind certainly don't help either. The tension between them continues to build until the very end when he gets tired of waiting (and gets creative.)
I also enjoyed learning more about the witches in the Collector's world. Sofia explains the different disciplines in which they can specialize, how to become a Master Spellcrafter and what makes her so special. (She insists from the moment we meet her in Aces Wild that her spells are better than everyone else's. And the incubus who wants to capture her seems to agree.) Her powers are more like those you might expect from an angel or a god, except that they're more narrow in scope. I don't think I've ever read about a witch like her.
I always remark in my reviews how Amanda Carlson has brought a unique twist to a familiar supernatural character. This time it's the incubus. They're often portrayed as the romantic lead, but she does something completely different. These incubi are a polygamous cult abducting supernatural women and their leader has twisted the incubus powers in a terrifying way.
I'm really enjoying this series so far. It's full of fun, quick reads with great action and unusual characters. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Love this series. The concept is great. I can't wait until each novella comes out.
I'm a huge fan of this writer, but I admit to being disappointed in the overall quality of this novella (different editor, perhaps?) The story line is great, and I enjoyed the characters quite a bit. My disappointment comes in editing-- I got tired of counting the number of times perfect(ly) and beautiful(ly) were used in chapters 12 and 13 alone. The repeated words showed a lack of care I've come to expect in the Blood novels. A good read, but not her best effort.
Just read Amanda Carlson's second Novella in the Sin City Collectors, Ante Up. Absolutely loved it. What a fast paced story. Diesel Jones & Sofia Cabrera are the main characters in this one. Nevada Hamilton & Jake Troubadour from the first Novella in the series, Aces Wild, return in this book. Diesel, who works for Jake @Hellhounds Bar in Vegas & his brother Luke go on a Collection of sorts & find some very unusual situations to say the least. Sofia & Diesel make quite the pair, a true romance, a real toe curler!
Amanda really knows how to keep your attention in her stories. The characters & setting are amazing, don't know how she thinks up all this exciting adventure that she puts the reader through, but glad she does.
So, if you want a great, short read & some fun get Ante Up, you won't be sorry!
Just finished Aces Wild, and with such a great lead into the next book, Ante Up, I had to start the next one right away! Diesel and Sofia's story is delightful. I wasn't sure what to think of Sofia when I read Aces Wild, but I really enjoyed the way her character developed in Ante Up. Her comments and sweet sassiness made me smile. They were a great contrast to Nevada's personality when the two collided. The development of the romance between Diesel and Sofia was heartwarming. I couldn't put the book down and am anxious to continue the story in All In. Enjoy!
I love this series. They are great stories, even if they could longer. The characters are very well developed, if you consider the length of the story. The romance is a little rushed, but once again, I think this has to do with the length.
We met both the hero and heroine in the first book, also written by Carlson (different books in this series are written by different authors). We have Sofia is a master witch. Diesel is a werewolf who cannot control himself during the full moon. His family locks him in a cage during the full moon to ensure that he doesn't hurt anyone.
We also get to see some characters from previous books. Plus, we meet Luke, Diesel's werewolf brother, and Ginger, a succubus and friend of Sofia. They will be the next couple for Carlson's next installment. Not sure when it comes out, but you can bet that I will be buying it.
